Axopar 38 Boat – Exclusive First Look With Jan-Erik Viitala

Everything you need to know about this next generation adventure boat

The Axopar 38 Boat has just been announced, and Eyachts had the privilege of sitting down with Axopar Co-Founder Jan-Erik Viitala for an exclusive walkthrough. In this conversation with Eyachts’ Joe Fox, Jan-Erik reveals insights into the design philosophy, new innovations, and how the Axopar 38 builds on the incredible legacy of the Axopar 37.

As Jan-Erik explains, “Every conceivable function of the 37 has been improved on the 38, there is so much more we can offer with the bigger, more volumous 38.”

This is not just another model launch, it is Axopar’s most ambitious project yet, created to deliver more livability and freedom of choice.

Why Did Axopar Decide to Build the Axopar 38 Boat?

The Axopar 37 has become a true icon, used by everyone from first-time boat owners to seasoned professionals, even governments and film crews. But according to Jan-Erik, boating habits are changing:

“We’ve seen such a tremendous community of 29 and 37 owners asking for more livability and comfort on board as boating evolves. The 38 answers that call.”

This feedback from customers and dealers drove the design of the Axopar 38 Boat, ensuring the model would suit both long-distance explorers and weekend cruisers.

Axopar 37 vs 38 – What’s Changed?

When it comes to Axopar 37 vs 38, the evolution is clear. The Axopar 37 became a global icon with over 3,000 hulls delivered, admired for its sharp drivability and versatile layouts. It set the standard in the adventure boating category.

The new Axopar 38 Boat builds directly on this legacy, offering more space, more customisation and more comfort. Compared to the 37, the 38 features a redesigned hull, a larger wheelhouse, standing headroom in the front cabin, and new options such as an aft opening windscreen and raised activity platforms. These changes create a boat that is more livable while still maintaining Axopar’s DNA of performance.

In the debate of Axopar 37 vs 38, the answer depends on the owner: the 37 remains a proven icon loved worldwide, while the 38 is for those ready to take modular boating and offshore adventure to the next level.

The Bow – What Options Are Available on the Axopar 38?

One of the biggest changes is at the bow. Instead of a fixed design, the Axopar 38 Boat offers multiple layouts.

“On the foredeck, you can create a full U-shaped sofa with storage underneath. You can add sun pads, a table with high and low positions, or even opt for the much-loved forward sunbed from the 37, now redesigned,” says Jan-Erik.

This flexibility allows owners to create a social entertaining area, a full sun lounge, or maximise deck space for activities.

Inside the Cabins – How Much More Space Does the Axopar 38 Offer?

Axopar has prioritised livability in the cabins, ensuring the 38 is more than just a day boat.

“We made standing height in the front cabin, even in the toilet and kitchen areas,” explains Jan-Erik. “The wheelhouse is way bigger too, giving more space, light, and comfort.”

Optional enclosed toilets, showers, and kitchen transform the 38 into a genuine cross cabin boat suited for overnight trips or longer adventures.

The Aft – What New Features Does the Axopar 38 have?

The aft area has been completely reimagined. Owners can choose from multiple options, a wet bar, a sofa, a leaning post, or a full aft cabin with a sunbed. But perhaps the biggest innovation is the option for an aft-opening windscreen.

“We’re going to have it as standard with a fixed windshield, but now also a fully openable windshield at the aft,” says Jan-Erik. “It completely changes the airflow and the communication between the saloon and the aft deck.”

This creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, a huge improvement for climates like Australia.

Activity Platforms – Why doesn’t Axopar offer Side Balconies?

While other brands promote side balconies, Axopar has taken a safer, more practical route.

“We see so many boat manufacturers doing it wrong by getting them too low, where they get hit by waves and even break,” Jan-Erik explains. “We’ve lifted our activity platforms clearly out of the water, but you still have full access around the fender box. It’s safer, smarter, and works in all conditions.”

These fixed or foldable activity platforms add usable deck space for watersports, swimming, and socialising, without risking safety or reliability.

Performance – How Fast Is the Axopar 38 Boat?

Drivability remains Axopar’s top priority.
“The No. 1 function of a boat should be that it drives and behaves well. Whatever Axopar is doing in the future will never compromise drivability. We focus on innovation, not gimmicks,” Jan-Erik states.
The Axopar 38 Boat features a newly designed hull, twin 300 hp or 350 hp outboards, and speeds exceeding 45 knots. With 830 litres of fuel capacity, it balances efficiency with long-range capability – a true adventure boat built for offshore exploring.

Development – How Long Did the Axopar 38 Take to Design?

Creating the world’s most modular boat was no small task.

“We’ve been working on it for almost three years,” says Jan-Erik. “The complexity of making four different models with interchangeable modules is why no one else is doing it. It’s time-consuming, costly, and hard, but that’s what makes Axopar unique.”

Range Overview – What Models Will the Axopar 38 Include?

The four models launching through 2026–2027 will include:
• Axopar 38 Cross Cabin – all-weather protection and expanded overnight space
• Axopar 38 Sun Top – open-air drivability with shelter from wind and spray, perfect as a luxury day cruiser
• Axopar 38 Cross Top – versatile with a raked windscreen and hardtop
• Axopar 38 CCX – for anglers and adventurers seeking a blend of fishing and leisure

Why Is the Axopar 38 Boat Different?

The Axopar 38 Boat represents the future of modular boating, a customisable boat that adapts to every lifestyle, whether as a luxury day cruiser or a high-performance adventure boat.

As Jan-Erik sums it up: “This is the most modular boat ever built in the world. We want customers to have the ability to choose what they want and what they need for their own boating. Every single area you move around the boat is made to work. Nothing feels cramped. Every option works in any environment, closed or open. That’s what makes the 38 so special.”

With its world premiere set for BOOT Düsseldorf in January 2026, the Axopar 38 Cross Cabin is already generating strong demand in Australia and worldwide. Stay tuned with Eyachts for exclusive updates as this groundbreaking model arrives down under.
