Greenline 40 Hybrid Performance Review

A Real-World Test of Electric, Hybrid and Diesel Modes

The Greenline 40 Hybrid continues to set the benchmark for sustainable cruising, blending electric propulsion, hybrid versatility and diesel power into one exceptionally capable coastal cruiser. As demand for efficient electric boats and refined hybrid yachts grows, the Greenline 40 remains one of the few models that can deliver genuine range and real-world performance across all three propulsion modes.

During this on-water review, we took the Greenline 40 Hybrid through its paces on the Coomera River and out into the Broadwater, testing how it performs in electric mode, hybrid diesel-electric mode, and full diesel mode. With a steady head tide, variable waterways and open-water chop, the day provided an ideal test environment.

Electric Boat Performance

Silent Cruising, Efficient Consumption

Electric mode is where the Greenline 40 Hybrid truly shines, delivering near-silent operation, zero emissions and impressive efficiency at displacement speeds. With dual electric motors and a large lithium power bank, the boat transitions smoothly through the speed range while maintaining stability thanks to its twin SKG keels.

Electric Speed and Range Test Results

Test results were going into a 1 to 1.5 knot current, resulting therefore add 1 to 1.5kts of propulsion.

6 knots

  • 53 percent throttle
  • Smooth, relaxed displacement cruising

7 knots

  • 60 percent throttle
  • 3 to 3.25 hours of runtime

8 knots

  • 84 percent throttle
  • 2.5 hours runtime

8.5 knots (maximum electric speed)

  • 100 percent throttle
  • Approx. 8 nautical mile range
  • 90 percent battery charge remaining after earlier running

From a usability standpoint, the sweet spot is between 6.5 and 7 knots, where runtime and efficiency balance perfectly. This is ideal for quiet cruising on waterways such as the Sydney Harbour, Gold Coast canals or Pittwater.

Hybrid Yacht, Regeneration and Combined Operation

The Advantage of a True Hybrid Yacht

Where the Greenline 40 stands apart from other hybrid yachts is its ability to blend diesel propulsion with electric regeneration. Running one diesel engine alongside one electric motor reduces load on the batteries while continuously replenishing the lithium bank.

Hybrid Operation Highlights

  • Seamless transition from electric to hybrid or diesel
  • Ability to run one electric and one diesel for extended range
  • Opportunity to alternate port and starboard engines
  • Up to 30 kW battery regeneration at planing speeds
  • Both diesel engines can operate as large generators when required

This gives owners the freedom to cruise quietly when conditions suit, then extend range or recharge underway without a generator.

Diesel Mode Performance

Strong, Efficient and Capable in Open Water

When you want to pick up speed, the Greenline 40 Hybrid performs confidently on diesel propulsion. Even under load and into a head tide, the hull delivers a smooth, predictable ride with excellent stability through wash and chop.

Diesel Speed and Efficiency Test Results

4 knots

  • 10 L/hr
  • 1800 rpm
  • 17 kW regeneration

8 knots

  • 20 L/hr
  • Ideal economical cruise

16 knots (optimal fast cruise)

  • 75 L/hr
  • 0.2 nm/L
  • 3300 rpm
  • 80 percent engine load
  • 30 kW regeneration
  • 30 minutes to full battery recharge from mid-range
  • 20 knots (top speed)

106 L/hr

  • 3700 rpm
  • 99 percent load
  • Charge rate decreases to protect the system

The most efficient planing speed sits around 16 knots, where the boat balances speed, handling and regeneration capability. It is impressive to replenish the battery bank at such a high rate without compromising performance.

Handling, Ride Quality and Comfort

A Hybrid Cruiser Designed for Australian Conditions

The hull behaves confidently for a semi-displacement design. Through chop, wash and turns, the boat remained stable and predictable. While not as sharp as an outboard-powered sports boat, the Greenline 40 offers a composed, safe ride ideal for long passages and family cruising.

Inside the saloon, noise levels remain low thanks to the centrally mounted engine and excellent insulation. With the electric motors engaged, the boat becomes whisper-quiet, offering a premium experience for entertaining, relaxing and cruising at sunrise or sunset.

Owners also benefit from:

  • Roof-mounted solar panels feeding the battery system
  • No requirement for a separate generator
  • Minimal noise or smell at anchor
  • The ability to run air-conditioning, refrigeration and onboard systems quietly

The Best of All Worlds in a True Hybrid Yacht

The Greenline 40 Hybrid proves its reputation as one of the most advanced and versatile hybrid yachts on the market. Whether cruising silently in electric mode, extending range in hybrid mode or enjoying the confidence of diesel speed offshore, the boat adapts beautifully to different conditions and styles of boating.

For Australian waterways and coastal passages, this model strikes a rare balance between sustainability, practicality and performance. Owners can cruise quietly, recharge underway and still enjoy the confidence of 20-knot capability when needed.
